Learn about Letters at Yoboi Reading House
#BersamaMelawanCovid19 - After being vacuum due to the Covid-19 pandemic since March 2020, the Yoboi Reading House in Sentani, Papua was reopened on July 8, 2020. The reopening of activities in the reading house began with the inaugural class: Learning to Know Letters. Class participants who were mostly students from Ifar Babrongko YPK Elementary School felt happy because they could meet each other in the class.
Before starting the activity, tutors and volunteers of the reading house directed the children to do handwashing with soap (CTPS) in running water. This CTPS activity is part of a clean and healthy life campaign voiced by Wahana Visi Indonesia Area (WVI) Sentani Program. After the children do hand washing, they then fill in the attendance list, coloring, drawing while waiting for the presence of their friends.
Learning letter recognition as the first class of the Yoboi Reading House this July, the children were first invited to hear stories with the title "Dogs and Shadows" which were read by tutors. Children are given the opportunity to ask and answer questions.
"From the Reading House activities that are taking place, it seems that the children are happy and enthusiastic to learn to read here," said Yoppi, one of the volunteers of Yoboi Reading House.
There were 11 children involved in reading activities on that day. There was a tutor and 2 volunteers who helped the children to enjoy reading activities.
"I think to help children can read and they need help, they need to be able to read," added the 39-year-old man.
Meanwhile, Ricky, another volunteer claimed to get the reality that there is a child who is difficult to write the words she has recited.
"There is a third-grader, she can name the letters, ring the letters but it is difficult to write all the letters that exist as in the word a-n-j-i-n-g," Ricky explained.
Activities at the Yoboi Reading House that day ended with singing and praying together. Activities in this Reading House will be continued routinely in every week.
